About JLH Lighting

Grocery stores are the center of community life. You see your neighbors there. They stayed open during a pandemic when almost everything else closed. They are, in the most literal sense, essential. The grocers who invest in their stores are investing in their communities, and the experience they create for their customers reflects that commitment. At JLH Lighting, that belief is the foundation of everything we do.

The Experience Behind the Work

Nick Jordan's career in lighting began on the warehouse floor of the North American office of a German grocery lighting company. He trained quickly on grocery lighting design and within a year was running the design department. Over the following years he took on progressively broader responsibility, ultimately overseeing North American operations before leaving to build something better.

That decision was driven by a simple reality: serving the grocery market well requires flexibility, responsiveness, and a genuine commitment to the client's success. When those things couldn't be delivered from within a large international organization, the answer was to start fresh.

JLH Lighting was founded in 2018, drawing on 18 years of hands-on grocery lighting experience spanning design, operations, and supply. The focus has always been primarily on grocery, with some general retail work given the natural overlap in design approach. The difference is that grocery demands a higher level of precision. The products on the shelf are perishable, personal, and visually complex. Getting the lighting right matters in a way that it simply doesn't in most other retail environments.

A Different Approach to Supply

Because JLH Lighting is not beholden to a line card, fixture selection is driven entirely by what is right for each application. That means evaluating products across the industry on the basis of light quality, optical performance, availability, and price, and recommending the combination that best serves the store and the budget.

It also means that when the right product doesn't exist, there is an obligation to do something about it.

That obligation led to the founding of Luxco Lighting, a St. Louis-based manufacturer that designs and assembles fixtures specifically for the grocery market. Every Luxco fixture was developed to address a gap, a place where other manufacturers were offering products designed for general commercial applications and calling them good enough for grocery. Luxco was built on the premise that good enough is not good enough, and that the grocery market deserves fixtures designed for it from the ground up.

National Reach, Singular Focus

JLH Lighting is based in St. Louis, Missouri and works with grocers across North America. From ground-up new builds to multi-store rollouts to targeted department remodels, the scope of work varies. The standard doesn't.

Every project starts with the same question: what do you want your customers to feel when they walk through the door? The answer shapes everything that follows, from the lighting plan to the fixture selection to the final result. The goal is always the same, a store that makes its products look exceptional and creates an environment that reflects the grocer's investment in their community.

If you're ready to talk about your store, we'd love to hear from you.
